Three Important Ways to Fight Gum Disease

The CDC estimates that over 64 million Americans, over the age of 30, are affected by some type of gum disease. There is believed to be a correlated link between poor oral health and rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and heart disease, creating the necessity for a more vital awareness of proper oral care and knowledge. In an effort to assist our patients in combating gum disease, we have a few recommendations to assist.

In the earliest phase, gum disease may appear as swollen, inflamed gums. The inflammation is a result of the immune system’s natural defenses to fight off the foreign bodies, in the form in bacteria. As the disease advances, gum tissue may deteriorate and retract from the teeth. At this stage, the disease is referred to as periodontitis. We believe that the best defense for this disease is a good offense, in the form of preventive measures of adequate oral care.

Brushing, Flossing and Regular Exams

Routine and optimal oral hygiene habits prove to be beneficial for the longevity of the teeth. Patients should be brushing at least twice a day and flossing once a day, preferably before initiating bedtime. Along with proper brushing and flossing techniques, routine cleanings and exams should be scheduled every six months.

Eliminating Risk Factors

Some risk factors associated with gingivitis and periodontitis may be beyond control, but awareness of the following risks may be vital in the prevention of gum disease.

• Smoking or using tobacco
• Seeking required treatment if you clench or grind your teeth
• Obtaining appropriate treatment during hormonal changes, such as pregnancy or menopause
• Removing sugary, acidic foods from your diet

If you have a genetic predisposition for gum disease or exposure to excessive stress levels, it is essential to maintain necessary, routine habits on your oral health care.
