If you have gum disease symptoms or suffer from gum disease, it is important to seek gum disease treatment, as you have open wounds in your gums that allow the bacteria to enter directly into your blood stream and circulate throughout your body.

  • Heart Disease

Dangers of Gum Disease in Murfreesboro, TN
Dangers of Gum Disease Murfressboro, TNGum disease can have an adverse effect on your overall health. This happens in two ways. Gum disease is caused by plaque, sheets of bacteria living on the roots and infecting the gums and bone around the teeth. These bacteria can pass directly into the bloodstream, creating a risk of infection in artificial heart valves and joints that have been replaced.

An even greater risk to our health is the chronic inflammation that occurs with gum disease. Inflammatory chemicals produced in the tissues around the teeth travel throughout the body. It is this increased burden of inflammation that raises the risk of heart attack, stroke and which complicates the management of diabetes in patients with untreated gum disease.

Having an active infection in the gums and bones around your teeth raises your risk of a heart attack or stoke by almost 3 times. This level of risk is similar to that caused by smoking cigarettes.

For individuals dealing with diabetes, having gum disease makes controlling your diabetes, a disease with life-threatening complications, much more difficult. In addition, people with diabetes are at a 3 times greater risk of developing gum disease because of their compromised immune systems. For these people eliminating the infection in the gum and bone and working to prevent reinfection not only allows them to keep their natural teeth but makes managing their diabetes easier.

Other health problems linked to gum disease include the delivery of pre-mature, low birth-weight babies, respiratory diseases and even erectile dysfunction!

In summary, it simply is not possible to be healthy without having a healthy mouth. Each of us at Periodontics and Implant Dentistry of Middle Tennessee is committed to helping our patients regain and then maintain good oral health, and their natural teeth, for a lifetime.
