Loose Teeth

When teeth get loose or shift it may be a sign of periodontal (gum) disease. What is periodontal disease? It is an infection which started in the gums around your teeth but has spread to the bones of your jaws. Damage to the bone can cause the loss of teeth. In fact, periodontal disease is the number one reason adults lose teeth. If your teeth are loose, please call Drs. Steven Daniel and Dr. Gaydos-Daniel, leading periodontists in the middle Tennessee region. We would love to help you get healthy and keep your teeth for a lifetime!

Why Teeth Get Loose

In the case of periodontal disease teeth get loose because the tissues that hold them in place, especially the bones of your jaws, are damaged or destroyed by the infection. Fortunately there are treatment options available that allow us to rebuild some, or even all, of the damaged bone and tissues after the infection has been eliminated. Which types of treatment are right for you and will produce the best results can be determined with an examination in our office.

Signs that Your Teeth are Getting Loose

If you have loose teeth, you are probably experiencing some of the following symptoms:

  • Gums feel sore, are bleeding or look red and inflamed

  • Noticeable pus around the teeth

  • Food getting caught between teeth or under the gum line

  • Receding gums

If you have any of these symptoms, there is a very good chance that an infection, which started in the gums, has spread to the bones supporting your teeth.

Preventing Loose Teeth

As with most things prevention is key! We work closely with your dentist to provide whatever care is needed to eliminate your infection and repair, to the best of our ability, the damage your infection has caused. We then continue to work together to provide ongoing maintenance with regular dental cleanings and examinations to ensure that your remain free of infection.
