A warm, plain-English Patient Center guide for patients and referring offices—from Periodontics & Implant Dentistry of Middle Tennessee.

A periodontist is a dentist with specialty training in the gums, the bone that holds your teeth, and dental implants—additional training after completing dental school. Your general dentist is like primary care for your mouth—checkups, cleanings, fillings, and crowns. We are the specialists you see when gums need treatment, tissue needs rebuilding, or implants need careful planning.
Some treatments—such as deep cleanings, gum procedures, bone grafting, or dental implants—can be offered by more than one type of provider. General dentists are the hub of your oral-health team; many also perform selected periodontal or implant procedures in their offices. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are surgical specialists whose training emphasizes complex oral surgery, extractions, pathology, and facial surgery; many also place implants, with a different training emphasis than periodontics. Periodontists complete specialty training centered on the gums, the bone that supports teeth, soft-tissue reconstruction, and implant care planned around healthy foundation tissues.
There is genuine overlap—and that is okay. The difference is not “who is allowed,” but depth of focus and case complexity. Patients and referring dentists often involve a periodontist for advanced gum disease, sophisticated soft-tissue or bone grafting, laser protocols such as LANAP® and LAPIP®, and carefully planned implant care. At our Murfreesboro practice, Dr. Steven Daniel, Dr. Joanne Gaydos-Daniel, and Dr. Sang Hun “David” Kim all perform periodontal surgeries. Dental implant consultations and placement are provided by Dr. Gaydos-Daniel and Dr. Kim—Dr. Daniel is implant trained and has chosen to focus on periodontal care rather than placing implants. We always aim to partner with your dentist (and other specialists when needed) so your care stays coordinated and respectful of the relationships you already trust.
Gum disease is infection of the gums and supporting bone. We treat it with deep cleaning, surgery when needed, and maintenance. LANAP® is a minimally invasive laser treatment for gum disease around natural teeth—offered by Dr. Gaydos-Daniel and Dr. Kim when it’s right for you.
When gums pull back (recession), roots can look longer and feel sensitive. A gum graft adds or moves healthy tissue to cover roots, thicken thin gums, and improve comfort—a core service here.
A dental implant replaces a missing tooth root; a consult plans everything first with exam and imaging. Implant consultations and placement are provided by Dr. Gaydos-Daniel and Dr. Kim. Dr. Daniel is implant trained and has chosen to focus on periodontal care rather than placing implants.
When the jaw needs more foundation: sinus lift, ridge augmentation, ridge preservation after extraction, and bone grafting—planned with imaging. Periodontal surgeries—including regenerative bone work—are performed by Dr. Daniel, Dr. Gaydos-Daniel, and Dr. Kim; implant-related bone procedures that support placement are planned with Dr. Gaydos-Daniel or Dr. Kim.
Osseous regeneration means regenerating the bone that supports your teeth or implants. We also use modern biomaterials and biologics—materials and growth-factor–type approaches that help your body rebuild tissue once thought lost for good. We stay current with advances in these approaches so more patients can regain foundation tissue that was previously considered impossible to restore.
Crown lengthening (less “gummy” smile or better access for a crown), frenectomy (release a tight tissue band), and periodontal plastic surgery to refine gum shape and coverage.
Specialty care for ailing or failing implants (peri-implantitis and related bone/soft-tissue loss): LAPIP® laser treatment, debridement of the implant surface and surrounding tissues, and grafting when foundation support needs rebuilding—alone or combined, after evaluation.
We offer sedation for anxious patients or longer procedures. Sedation is discussed at your consult and is typically a separate cost from the clinical treatment. Ask our team what’s available for your visit.
Bleeding or receding gums, loose teeth, missing teeth, a tender implant, a gummy smile, or a referral from your dentist are all good reasons to call. Two common starting points:
Disease, recession, grafting, LANAP, crown lengthening, frenectomy, or soft-tissue concerns—periodontal surgeries with Dr. Daniel, Dr. Gaydos-Daniel, or Dr. Kim.
Missing teeth, failing bridges or dentures, full-arch questions—with Dr. Gaydos-Daniel or Dr. Kim.
A referral helps but isn’t always required. Self-referred patients are welcome. Bring medications, recent X-rays if you have them, insurance info, and your questions.
