Gum Grafting in Murfreesboro, TN
Gum Grafting in Murfressboro, TNWhat is gum grafting? It is a generic name for a number of plastic surgical procedures used to repair receded gums. What causes gum recession? Either infection, such as periodontal disease, or trauma, such as brushing too hard, grinding your teeth while sleeping or even damaging gums while eating hard foods. The results can be severe. When the gums (which you can see) are lost you have also lost the supporting bone (which you cannot see) of the tooth. The exposed root can be sensitive to hot and cold, is susceptible to decay and, in the front of the mouth, can be unsightly. Rebuilding the lost tissue can take care of these problems. Having the tissue made strong again can also prevent additional loss of bone which could lead to the loss of teeth. We want you to keep your teeth!

A gum grafting procedure with Dr. Steven Daniel and Dr. Joanne Gaydos-Daniel can correct gum recession and make a smile healthy and attractive again. So, how is this done?

Gum Grafting Procedures

Sometimes repairing recession can be as simple as repositioning gum tissue you have to cover the defect. Often, however, the recession has destroyed the thick natural gum which surrounds the teeth and can stand up to normal wear and tear. In this case the lost tissue is replaced. It can be replaced by tissue taken from another part of your mouth or by tissue from a tissue bank. While there are times when the patient's tissue is preferable (very severe defects) most of the grafting procedures we do are done with tissue from a tissue bank. This safe, predictable alternative material avoids a second surgical site in the mouth to obtain the graft. Of course, the choice is always left to our patients to make!
